…..On November 7, 2008, the U.S. District Court in Seattle granted final approval of a class action settlement for owners and lessees of certain 2003 to 2005 General Motors vehicles with allegedly defective speedometers (also known as “console clusters”).

If your vehicle is within 7 years or 70,000 miles (110,000 km) of the date it was first placed in service, GM must replace the instrument panel (parts and labor) for free.
If your vehicle is between 70,001 miles (110,001 km) and 80,000 miles (130,000 km) of the date it was first placed in service, GM must replace the instrument panel (parts) for free. Any labor costs will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner.
If your vehicle is older than 7 years or over 80,000 miles, you no longer qualify for the special coverage adjustment and must seek alternative means of repair.

Notice of the proposed settlement was mailed to potential class members whose identities were known to GM in or around July and August 2008. Owners and lessees of covered vehicles who paid for repairs to the speedometer before receiving that notice are eligible for reimbursement under the following terms:
If the speedometer failed and your vehicle had less than 70,000 miles on it, upon proper proof of claim GM will reimburse you for the cost of repairs (parts and labor) up to the limit of what a GM dealership would have charged.
If the speedometer failed and your vehicle had more than 70,000 miles but less than 80,000 miles on it, upon proper proof of claim GM will reimburse you for the cost of the part only (no labor).

My vehicle qualifies for the settlement, now what?
Contact your nearest GM dealership to schedule an appointment. You will need to provide the VIN and vehicle mileage so the instrument cluster can be ordered in advance of the appointment. This will eliminate the need to keep the vehicle overnight.

My vehicle DOES NOT qualify for the settlement. What’s my best option?

1. Remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle (printable instructions)
2. Print the free shipping label that will be emailed to you after purchase
3. Pack the cluster in a well padded box
4. Affix the free shipping label and drop off at any USPS location
